About Saving Heat
Windows

Windows are the eyes to the soul of your house!

Nice Windows!
The addition of new windows gave this south-facing sun-room a breath of new life while maintaining architectural character and adding efficiency and convenience.
Through the glass, the sun brings life-giving light and warmth into the sanctuary of your home. When those windows are old and decrepit though, energy and warmth leak back out into the cold, taking with it your family's comfort and your home's protection from the elements.

Your windows loose more heat than any other exterior surface in your home. Besides being points of direct air infiltration, they are also the coldest surfaces of your home. Conversely, in the summer, windows are the greatest source of heat gain in your house.

ASHCo has been making your home more comfortable and safe from the outside heat and cold by restoring old windows and installing new windows for over 25 years. We specialize in retrofitting your home with thermally-advanced windows that improve your view, increase your comfort and are convenient to clean and maintain.

Our experienced comfort auditors and window technicians will help you discover the best way to solve your thermally-related window problems.

Window Insulation Terms
Infiltration --Direct exchange of outside and inside air. Single pane windows offer little pressure resistance to infiltration and air has an easier time flowing from hot to cold. With dual-pane windows, infiltrating air must displace trapped air between windows, which offer high-pressure resistance, before it can enter the room.
Convection --This is the force that makes warm air rise and denser, cool, air fall. With cold window glass and frames, warm room air is chilled so rapidly it falls to the floor and causes cold interior drafts. Interior mounted Easyslider windows insulate your warm room air from cold window frames and glass minimizing convection and eliminating cool interior drafts.
Conduction -- The actual transfer of heat through materials. Frames-especially metal frames-are heat conductors. With Easysliders, you are insulated from your cold glass and frames, which greatly reduces conductive heat loss.
Radiation -- Transfer of heat through wavelengths. Glass is opaque to low temperature wavelengths. Each layer of glass absorbs and slows down the heat transfer.
Low-E (emisstivity) coating -- a special clear coating cooked onto your window that reflects long wave (heat) energy while transparent to short wave (light) energy.

Just what is Window Restoration?
Window Restorer
This is one of our carpenters working on restoring a wooden window frame for a restoration job at historic Larimer Square.
Depending on the condition of your existing wood windows, window restoration can be anything from unsticking windows that have been painted shut, to filling in all the dry rot that exists in old wood sashes and widow sills. Re-roping and realignment of meeting rails (so windows can lock easily), weather-stripping, replacing old, cracked putty and glass are other aspects of wood window restoration.

About Saving Heat Co. not only weatherizes windows, but also restores wood windows to their structurally sound and historically correct condition. We also make wood screens and storms to complement your restored and easy to operate original wood windows. Interior glass storms are also available to preserve the exterior appearance of historic buildings.

You can keep the charm and be cozy and comfortable. The cost of restoring windows is usually substantially less than new replacement windows. Restoration is the environmentally-correct approach because it saves trees and manufacturing resources and does not create a disposal problem. Chuck Yeager, window restoration specialist, and employee of About Saving Heat Co. for over 10 years, supervise the work.

Window Replacement
There comes a time in the life of every window when it needs to be replaced. Sometimes that time is because of cosmetics while often it is due to structural or thermal reasons. The average life of a "new" construction window is 20 years. as builders typically buy the least expensive windows available. About Saving Heat Co. manufactures and distributes interior and exterior storm windows and replacement windows.

We will evaluate what window solutions are best for your window problems and measure for custom-made windows. We offer either wood or vinyl windows. Our products, coupled with our insulation techniques can save you more than half of the energy lost through your old windows!

The Easyslider is a new insulating window system designed for cost effectiveness.
Easyslider Diagram

Utilizing glass and lightweight, durable materials, the Easyslider provides an effective thermal and noise barrier. Not only does the Easyslider provide an effective barrier, it also costs less than conventional storms, insulated glass and replacement windows.

And, lower purchase price and installation costs mean the Easyslider will pay for itself that much sooner.

If you already have conventional exterior storms or insulated glass, the Easyslider can be utilized to provide even greater efficiency and comfort.

The Easyslider is designed for easy interior installation.
The Easyslider mounts inside, on your windowsill. This means the materials need only concern themselves with providing an effective noise and thermal barrier and not with the outside elements.

The Easyslider consists of a pair of weather-stripped white or brown aluminum-framed glass panels that slide easily in a matching vinyl track. The vinyl track, designed especially for the Easyslider, is attached to the windowsill with a urethane foam insulating sandwich adhesive.

Easysliders install no less than one inch and no more than four inches from your existing windows. This proper interior placement maximizes Easyslider thermal performance against the three major window discomforts: infiltration of cold air; conduction, and convection.

Optional Low-E coating is also available on your Easysliders. The Low-E coating reduces fading on your upholstery fabrics and optimally reflects heat radiation, keeping you warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Low-E coating is transparent to light energy (short-wave) but is like a mirror to heat energy (long wave).

Interior mounting means easy installation no matter how many stories up. In addition, there are no outside shrubs or other landscaping to fight, either during installation or cleaning. And, no homeowner or condominium board approval is needed to install these windows.

The Easyslider is designed to easily open for ventilation. There are no snaps, catches, buttons, mechanical parts, nothing to remove when you want fresh air. The Easyslider simply slides open for ventilation, easily slides shut for insulation.

The Easyslider is designed for easy care.
Easyslider panels lift right out of their vinyl tracks to the inside. This means easy cleaning, no matter what the weather is outside, no matter on what floor your Easyslider is installed.

The Easyslider is designed to minimize maintenance.
Easyslider's aluminum frames slide in a vinyl track. This virtually eliminates friction and, consequently, wear and maintenance. With the Easyslider, there are no wheels or guides to wear out or come off the track.

Easyslider windows reduce inside condensation
Even in colder temperatures, with Easyslider windows, the interior surface temperature of your windows stays closer to room temperature and that warm, moist inside air is less likely to condense on the inside. Condensation and its damaging effects on window sills and drywall is greatly reduced by the Easyslider's additional glass pane and weather-stripped design.

Window Quilts
Window Quilts
Decorative window quilts are the most effective type of window insulation.
Window quilts are the original insulating window shade and the only effective window insulation that rolls up completely when not in use. They seal the window on all four sides while significantly increasing the insulation of the windows. They also decrease window condensation with a built-in Mylar vapor barrier.

Window quilts:

  • Eliminate air infiltration from leaky windows
  • Add five times the insulation to single pane and three times the insulation to dual-pane windows
  • Reduce moisture condensation on window glass
  • Block the heat from direct solar gain thus moderating the thermal extreme on any area.
  • Reduce noise and traffic levels by up to 35%

Window quilts are custom designed and factory manufactured for a perfect fit. The quilts are available in various patterns and colors and can also be made for skylights and other tilted windows.

Caulking and Weather-stripping
Those little cracks around windows, doors and construction seams add up to large amounts of heat loss. If there is a 1/8th inch crack it may appear minor but 8 continuous inches equals one square inch. So a standard single exterior door, 36 inches wide by 80 inches tall, or 232 inches around all four sizes equals 29 square inches, or just about a 5-inch by 5-inch hole in your wall!

Besides paying to heat all that cold air entering your house, those cold drafts are uncomfortable and irritating. We pay strict attention to air infiltration when we install new windows or restore your old ones. We seal all window frames, structural seams and utility openings and we caulk from the outside to stop air infiltration before it enters your homes as well as caulk from the inside to prevent heat loss and insure the caulking stays strong by keeping it away from the elements.

We can complete your infiltration control with window and door weather-stripping. From the most obvious to the most overlooked, we are there to stop air infiltration from robbing your heat and energy dollars.
